ABSTRACT

There is a dread disease called bilharziasis. (Australian soldiers in World War I called it "the Bill Harris" rather than struggle with the pronunciation.) This very serious disease is caused by a little worm called a blood fluke, and if you read about the horrible symptoms you may want to dash off and pay $20 for an inoculation, if there is such a thing. On the other hand, paying $20 in an attempt to ward off every disaster we hear mentioned is to court the certain disaster of poverty.
