ABSTRACT

This change divided the population into two groups: those who saw the change as an improvement, and those who complained about it and even claimed that the new statement was less informative than the old. The problem with most of the latter group is that they dislike, or even fear, numbers. Recently such people have been dubbed "innumerates," meaning that their relation to numbers is similar to that of illiterates to words. It is a habit of some innumerates to try to cover up their inadequacy by proclaiming it to be a virtue, but we shall do as the weather bureau did and plow ahead, hoping in time to wipe out innumeracy.
