ABSTRACT
Alert readers may have noticed in recent years a great increase in the use of the word "significant." "Scientists have discovered that the weather is significantly warmer (colder) than it was a hundred years ago." Usually this word is being used in a technical sense introduced by statisticians, and it doesn't always mean what a nonstatistician might expect it to mean.
