Whether the sportswriter was being facetious or not, the example is a useful one because many studies reported in the papers put us into the position of the Martian-that is, we don't have any information other than the quoted statistics - and we tend to accept the conclusions that accompany the report. How can we reduce our gullibility in this respect?
