ABSTRACT
Alert human beings, hit by something unpleasant, seek to find its cause so that they can avoid it in the future. Primitive people tried to explain various phenomena by inventing a god for each one. Superstitions were born as individuals tried to blame catastrophes on whatever events had occurred just before, as when a person might have a heart attack shortly after breaking a mirror or having his or her path crossed by a black cat.
