ABSTRACT

Smart cities are the topic of hot debate. Billions are spent on developing them, yet there seems to be little middle ground between the extremes of viewpoint on them. In fact, up until now, discussions about technology advancement in smart cities have been scuttled by poorly constructed marketing messages and the loose use of terminology and the vitriolic backlash to those messages. In this chapter, we’ll relieve the discussion of hyperbole, propose a common terminology and approach to the smart city, and show how well-known models and examples can help establish a useful framework for thinking about smart cities.
