ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the challenges for urban planning activities when using information and communications technology (ICT) to resolve safety, regulatory, and social issues. The application of technology has often been considered a largely neutral activity, but it is, in fact, much more complex, and often has political implications. In this chapter, we’ll discuss the weaknesses of a technology-centric planning approach when compared to a human-centered solutions-oriented approach. When a technology is selected for pragmatic reasons, it’s prudent to question the political implications of the deployment and governance of technology.
