ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a foundation for understanding how we can best measure from a holistic perspective the success of designs that we bring to our plans for the smart city, including our treatment of the important issues of energy efficiency, energy intensity, and emissions intensity. Further, we probe the information communications technology (ICT) aspects of building design, exploring how ICT informs a full and positive integration with the lives of urban citizens. We also discuss the relationship between our fundamental resources of energy and water and how they can be optimally managed.
