ABSTRACT

A good definition of playing is that of “a pleasurable activity without purpose that is undertaken for its own benefit”. It is, however, much more. In play, young horses optimize their coordination of movements and simultaneously practice social behavior. It serves to practice the behaviors that are important in adult life, and allows youngsters to gain new experiences. Play further enhances physical and psychological health. It is only shown in the “relaxed zone”. The feeling of security required for playing is provided by the dam for her foal, and by the herd or companions for adult horses.
