Causes. Causes for the first-time appearance of cribbing are drastic events that result in an extreme emotional upset in the affected horse. Primary causes are premature or incorrect weaning from the dam, an abrupt start into training or sudden preparation for a competition or horse show, excessively harsh training methods, change of the barn for the worse, and isolation of the horse without sufficient exercise due to disease.
