ABSTRACT
Engineering works such as the construction of highways or site development in hilly terrain necessitates the cutting of slopes (Figure 8.1). These need to be excavated safely and economically, designed not to fail and to avoid any ongoing risk from rockfall or erosion. In addition, rock-slope stability is important to quarrying and open-pit mining; some of the important related issues are addressed here.
