ABSTRACT

Forming processes give shape to the product. The powders are the starting materials for shaping a ceramic product. The powders produced by different methods illustrated in Chapter 12 are rst given preconsolidation treatment. They are subjected to batching. Each batch is then taken for shaping. Again, there are different shaping methods. The selection of a particular method depends on many factors. They are:

a. The size and dimensional tolerances of the product b. The requisite microstructural characteristics c. The levels of reproducibility required d. Economic considerations e. The required shape

Shaping methods in ceramics can be grouped into three-pressing, casting, and plastic forming. Pressing is also termed as compaction. Compaction involves the application of an external pressure to a powder contained in a die. The  pressure can be applied uniaxially or isostatically. Uniaxial pressing is used for the production of simple shapes. For complex shapes, isostatic pressing is employed.
