ABSTRACT
The effects of various constituents of commercial otic pharmaceutical products on the meatal epithelium and the tympanic membrane were studied in an experimental model6. Benzalkonium chloride (a quaternary ammonium preservative) produced profound effects such as acanthosis and surface ulceration. A mixed inflammatory infiltrate in the dermis was also noted.
