ABSTRACT: Conceptual ideas for tunneling weak zones within the Gotthard-Base-Tunnel project are investigated by means of different numerical approaches. A 3-dimensional DEM-approach is used to determine the minimum distance between the face of a test chamber and the weak zone avoiding face collapse. Two-dimensional continuum models are used to investigate concepts for rock mass treatment in terms of strength increase and dewatering. The feasibility of the concept was proven and demands in respect to the improved rock mass properties, created by injection, are formulated. Requirements for tunnel support are deduced from the modeling.
