ABSTRACT

Definition Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) has been a controversial topic in valvular heart disease. The current definition, as outlined by the ACC/AHA task force, includes echocardiographic findings of atrial displacement of mitral leaflets, accompanied by auscultatory findings of a midsystolic click. It is the most prevalent of valvular heart diseases, affecting between 2% and 6% of the population, and is the most common cause of mitral regurgitation (Bonow et al., 1998).
