ABSTRACT

Emmanuel and his mother and father have just returned home. Oriana pours a beverage into a tall glass and heads quickly out the kitchen door. “You can come over here to my house if you want,” Oriana yells across the lawn to a Hood friend she has never actually met in person. “Here’s some lemonade!” Emmanuel turns when he hears her voice. He looks as if he wants to reply to her invitation. “Well, are you coming over or not?” Oriana shouts. Emmanuel drops his gaze toward the ground. “Oh, come on,” she chides, holding the glass out in front of her. Emmanuel steps toward her with the soft deliberation of a cautious yet curious kitten. “You’re going to like it,” she assures him. “This crop of lemons is especially sweet.”
