ABSTRACT

Just as the atom is the structure that defines the boundary between chemical and nuclear phenomena, the cell serves as the structure that defines the boundary between living and non-living. While it would be difficult to argue that any single molecule within a cell is alive, pluck a single cell at random from an organism, and chances are good that all of the information and machinery required for life will be found there.
