ABSTRACT

The Netherlands was one of the fi rst countries to undertake remediation of contaminated sites. Since the early 1980s, the investigation and remediation of contaminated sites has been high on the agenda, and the recent Midterm Review (Uitvoeringsprogramma Bodemconvenant 2013) revealed that the end of the process of managing historically contaminated sites is in sight. The review gave a comprehensive overview of the remaining contaminated sites that need remediation. Out of a total of 1539 remaining sites, at 1177 sites the risk as a result of spreading contamination plumes impacting groundwater quality is the dominant factor (whereas the risk for humans or ecology near the surface is a priority at 362 sites).
