ABSTRACT

History and examination A 54-year-old priest was referred to the lipid clinic by a vascular surgeon, because of dyslipidemia. He had been diagnosed with intermittent claudication 2 years previously (bilateral calf discomfort while walking about 1000 m). At that time he stopped smoking (ex-smoker: 60 pack/years) and gained approximately 10 kg. He drank a glass of red wine every night. Apart from his claudication he had been in good health with no serious illness. His father died aged 60 of coronary heart disease (CHD), his mother had type 2 diabetes mellitus and his brother had CHD (PTCA + stent). The patient’s medication included aspirin (100 mg/day).
