ABSTRACT

Surfaces and interfaces of particles are very important with respect to their end use. Many particles are used as fillers in polymer matrices and they usually impart properties that enhance a materials function. Therefore, the particles need to be compatible with the polymer matrix into which they are placed. To enhance the compatibility of the silica particles and silica glass beads, surface modification was carried out, such as: Surface polymerization, surface polymer grafting, and surface dendrimerization. The surface properties obtained varied, from highly hydrophilic to highly hydrophobic, from anionic and cationic to nonionic.
