ABSTRACT

Fire-retardant grades of polymers are becoming mandatory for many structural applications especially in the construction and transport industries. High-performance polymers and even enhanced forms of commodity polymers have become the preferred materials in many durable products due to their ease of processing or shaping, corrosion resistance, and low density. The main disadvantage of nearly all polymers over conventional materials is flammability. Concerns over flammability extend from structural materials to fittings, furnishings, floor coverings, drapes, wall hangings, seals, and paint. Many incidents have been reported where building and transport fires have been exacerbated by polymers.
