ABSTRACT

Simulation has to prove its worth to justify the investment. However, the modelling, simulation and training technology is improving and getting more realistic as time goes by. Aviation safety and more specifically, the preventive aspect of it, is mainly based on repetition; in other words: going through the same routine, over and over again. It creates proper habit patterns. Pilots should be aware and should learn from situations they have experienced themselves or from the experience of others, and act on it. The type of accidents and incidents which the Royal Netherlands Air Force is faced with is practically the same every time, irrespective of the type of aircraft. But, every time it happens, it is a new generation of pilots whom it is happening to. Therefore, prevention remains to be continuous effort. The standard routine after every F-16 sortie is to thoroughly analyze the entire mission is during the debriefing, using the video images, among other things.
