ABSTRACT
Genes on the Y chromosome are directly responsible for determining gender. It is the sex-determining region on the Y chromosome (SRY ) gene that induces testis formation and it is the absence of this region in a female embryo that results in the development of the female reproductive tract, along a default pathway. This is why XY individuals are normally male and XX individuals are normally female.
