ABSTRACT

The contamination of the mesosphere with heavy metals is a worldwide problem, mainly caused by anthropogenic activities like mining processes. Acid mine drainage (AMD) associated with this activity is a common problem, especially when sulphidic, pyrite containing ores are exploited (Johnson 2003). Through oxidation and erosion, accelerated by microbial pyrite oxidation and leaching, acid is generated which results in environmental conditions mobilizing heavy metals. Rainfall and rising groundwater levels lead to heavy metal contaminated waters, which are bioavailable for both plants and other organisms.
