ABSTRACT

Laparoscopic fundoplication is an alternative to open fundoplication to correct gastro-esophageal reflux. Like the open fundoplication, it has been shown to increase fasting and post-prandial lower esophageal sphincter pressure and to decrease the rate of transient lower esophageal sphincter relaxation. Mean lower esophageal sphincter pressures increase from about 7 mmHg to 17 mmHg. These changes result in a significant reduction in the time the esophageal mucosa is exposed to acid. Although some studies suggest the motor function of the esophageal body is not affected by laparoscopic fundoplication, there is some evidence that it may decrease esophageal body peristaltic efficiency and the velocity of propagation of peristaltic waves.
