ABSTRACT

Stem cells have been a tool for the treatment of devastating diseases like leukemia and other types of cancer for many decades now. Initially, only hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) were administered in patients after myeloablation to induce the recovery of the blood and immune system. Today, many other types of progenitor and immune cells have been identified and are used selectively for different clinical applications. Amongst the various types of stem cells, adult mesenchymal stromal cells have emerged as cells with unique biological properties also making them candidates for the use in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
