ABSTRACT

A shaft is usually a straight, mostly round bar that rotates in bearings. It serves as a support for various rotating or stationary parts mounted on it and also as the torque transmitting member of a mechanism. To meet their functions, the shafts are generally provided with seats for the bearings and shaft-mounted parts and with torque transmission elements, such as splines, keyways, anges, and others. Several examples of shafts are discussed below.
