ABSTRACT

The European Union (EU) legislation on health and safety is primarily contained within the Framework Directive (89/391/EEC) and a series of daughter Directives (The Council of the European Communities, 1989). The framework directive sets the overall framework for health and safety and lists the general principles of prevention. The daughter Directives deal with individual aspects of the work system, for example the Manual Handling Directive (89/269/EEC) and the Display Screen Equipment Directive (89/ 270/EEC) (The Council of the European Communities, 1990a; The Council of the European Communities, 1990b).
