ABSTRACT

The molecular basis of the connection was recently established by gene expression profiling that identified a common set of differentially expressed genes. However, it was not well understood how the integration of individual molecular differences can lead to the emergence of different diseases. From the perspective of systems biology, it is the complex network of interactions among the genes and gene products that leads to the physiologic/pathologic phenotypes that we observe. To deepen our understanding of complex diseases and their mechanistic connections, it is important to uncover system-level control mechanisms of the underlying network.
