ABSTRACT

Since its development in the early 1970s CT has remained the radiological examination of choice in the acute assessment of a patient with a head injury. CT illustrated for the first time the multiplicity and complexity of the structure of living pathology in head injury (see Figures 9.42, 9.48). This improved our understanding of the mechanisms involved, allowed more rational treatment and thus improved the outcome for the patient. The increasing availability of highresolution rapid acquisition scanners will hopefully further improve the early diagnosis, management and hence outcome in these patients.
