ABSTRACT

Crohn disease Crohn disease is an idiopathic, chronic, transmural inflammatory process. It can affect the entire GIT system from mouth to anus, often leading to fibrosis and obstructive symptoms. No cause has been identified, but there are many theories that it may be caused by genetic, microbial, immunological, environmental, dietary, vascular and even psychosocial factors. The initial presentation may be with loss of weight, diarrhoea and short stature, or abdominal pain with the suggestion of intestinal obstruction. It may present with anal fissure or fistulae or abscess. Patients may also present with episcleritis, uveitis, erythema nodosum and pyoderma gangrenosum, or peripheral arthritis.
