ABSTRACT
The mathematical quantity we now call entropy arose from nearly independent lines of theoretical development in classical thermodynamics through the work of Clausius, statistical mechanics through the work of Boltzmann and Gibbs, and communications theory through the work of Shannon. At the end of the chapter we shall discuss in more detail these historical developments and the place entropy holds in these fields.
