ABSTRACT

A new 1.2km long quay wall, container terminal and canal access are planned at East Port Said, Egypt, at the location shown in Figure 1. Extensive deposits o f deltaic clays - the Nile Delta clays - are present at the site and extend to depths o f 60m below ground level. This paper describes key aspects o f the ground investigation that was carried out for the quay wall, its interpretation and the engineering characterisation of the deltaic clays. As with the investigation, the paper focusses on the quality o f the samples that were obtained.
