ABSTRACT

It is now common for individuals to receive mental health care, support and treatment in a community environment (Brooker and Repper, 1998). This change has been achieved over the last 30 years. Until the 1970s, most treatment for individuals suffering severe and recurring mental health illness was provided within inpatient facilities. The challenges to community health and social care workers have increased as inpatient facilities have gradually reduced and individuals with mental health problems have been able to lead much more normal lives in community settings with appropriate treatment and support provided in a range of facilities (Falloon and Faddon, 1993; Strathdee and Sutherby, 1996; Brooker and Repper, 1998).
