ABSTRACT
General practice is the first place of contact for most patients with concerns about their health in the UK, and has been the backbone and one of the main strengths of the NHS since its inception in 1948 (Parliament of Great Britain, 1947). About a third of all doctors who qualify in the UK become GPs, dealing with more than one million consultations per day, and managing over 90 per cent of illness within primary care.
