ABSTRACT

Introduction Schizophrenia is probably the most debilitating illness, affecting nearly 1 per cent of the population. Despite the advances in pharmacological treatment of schizophrenia, just under half of the patients continue to experience hallucinations and delusions when on medication. Along with this, the side effects of the medication and the affective symptoms often prompt the patients to look for effective alternatives. In treatment-resistant schizophrenia, a lack of response to medication can generate a therapeutic nihilism.
