ABSTRACT

The transvenous route is usually used for temporary pacing but, in emergencies, transcutaneous and oesophageal approaches are possible short-term alternatives.

Temporary transvenous pacing is a simple procedure. However complications are common because it is often carried out by inexperienced, unsupervised operators. The need for temporary pacing should be carefully considered before proceeding. In general, patients with infrequent bradycardias should not receive a temporary pacemaker while awaiting implantation of a long-term pacemaker.
