ABSTRACT

Many patients with complications from venous disease including leg ulcers have underlying predominant superficial reflux rather than deep venous disease.1-3 Accordingly, treatment for leg ulceration may include control of superficial saphenous reflux. Traditionally, this has been by surgical ligation and stripping, with varying attitudes towards treating calf perforators. In recent years, an alternative treatment has been ultrasound-guided echosclerotherapy. This chapter explores possible indications, techniques and medium-term outcome for this technique illustrated by a personal experience of 308 patients followed by ultrasound surveillance.
