ABSTRACT

According to Linton,1 surgery for venous ulceration was first performed by Rémy in 1901,2 but John Homans of Boston is generally acknowledged as being its originator. Homans3 distinguished between ‘varicose’ and ‘postphlebitic’ ulceration and his paper includes the following description:

Homans described eight operations for the treatment of venous ulcers, all of which were initially successful, although two ulcers subsequently recurred.
