ABSTRACT

The main aim of this chapter is to show how people who have received a diagnosis of dementia can be helped by a modified counselling technique, referred to as dementia counselling. The chapter also shows how people who are undertaking such counselling will need to interact with other professionals caring for the person with dementia, especially with the principal family carer if there is one. A number of techniques that can be used by dementia counsellors are described. Issues and the effects of counselling are illustrated by quotations from people with dementia who have received this type of support.
