ABSTRACT

There has, in recent decades, been increasing concern within Western society generally on issues relating to violence and abuse. Following a focus in the UK on child abuse in the 1970s and domestic violence in the 1980s, concern arose in the 1990s about the abuse and neglect of older people. The initial focus of interest was on the domestic or home setting. More recently, however, much needed attention has shifted to situations involving institutional settings (Stanley et al. 1999).
