signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) that applies only to situations in which the decision variable arises from one of two normal distributions having equal variances, but different means. In such situations, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve is symmetric about the diagonal of the unit square in which it is plotted and is given by the mathematical expression:
