ABSTRACT
The upper airways, lower airways and lungs present a surface area open to external factors greater than any other organ system. In consequence, they have developed a complex structure and set of mechanisms to provide protection and act as a defence against injury or harm. The bellows function is but a fraction of the utility and there are important functions with regard to acid-base homoeostasis and immunology.
