The kidney achieves this by a complex system of buffers, which result in the excretion of H or HCO3. This is a slow process that occurs over days.
The pH of the urine must not fall below 4.5, and this is also achieved by the buffering system (see also ‘Acid-base balance, Chapter 84, page 349).
