The Royal College of Surgeons’ guidelines on hernia management suggest the Liechtenstein repair or Shouldice technique for primary uncomplicated inguinal hernias.

• History and examination • Exclude other causes of pain • Gain informed consent • Mark side • Prophylactic antibiotics (particularly in an incarcerated hernia) • Usually one shot of a broad-spectrum antibiotic, e.g. cefuroxime, at induction

will suffice • General or local anaesthetic can be used
