ABSTRACT
Hypertrophy This is an increase in the size of a tissue or organ because of an increase in the size of its cells.
Hyperplasia This is an increase in the size of a tissue or organ because of an increase in the number of its cells. It can occur only in cells that are capable of DNA synthesis. Hence nerve, cardiac and skeletal muscle cells undergo almost only pure hypertrophy when stimulated by hormones or increased functional demand.
