ABSTRACT

An action potential is a rapid change in the membrane potential caused by influx of positive ions, followed by a return to resting membrane potential caused by efflux of positive ions; this leads to the generation of an electrical impulse that enables signalling to occur in excitable tissue (nerve and muscle).
