ABSTRACT
Sepsis remains an important and life-threatening problem
and continues to be the principal cause of death in patients
admitted to an intensive care unit. Approximately 150 000
people die annually in Europe from severe sepsis, and more
than 200 000 in the USA.1 In recent years there have been a
number of changes in our understanding and management
of sepsis, although the mortality remains high.
