ABSTRACT

In this chapter, a collection of unrelated drugs that may be used in patients undergoing anesthesia is considered. The largest group is the antiemetic drugs, which will be discussed in some detail. Included in the antiemetic drugs are the dopamine antagonists, which have also been used as neuroleptics in techniques such as neuroleptanalgesia and neuroleptanesthesia. The use of neuroleptics in anesthesia for this purpose is gradually dying out, with only a few papers being published in recent years (mainly in the Russian language). Consequently, this section will be relatively brief. Heparin, protamine, and the intravenous contrast media and dyes will be considered mainly in relation to adverse effects that must concern the anesthesiologist.
