ABSTRACT

Since it is impossible to write comprehensively of every congenital syndrome that might affect anaesthetic management, this chapter will present an approach to the evaluation of children with congenital syndromes. It will include a discussion of those anomalies with obvious implications for anaesthesia management or monitoring, and some syndromes with subtle or hidden potential problems. A more complete list of syndromes grouped by area of potential anaesthetic impact appears in Table 28.1, which expands and reorganises the indices of Jones and Pelton [1] and Steward and Lerman [2]. Roizen and Fleisher [3], and Baum and O’Flaherty [4] are recommended further reading.
